5 Steps for Active Listening

5 Steps for Active Listening

Active listening is a skill that I am always trying to improve upon. It's one of the most valuable skills to learn in life and in business.

Being a talkative, outgoing extrovert I always have to be conscious that I don't dominate conversations and enthusiastically cut people off from what they're saying.  Letting people finish their sentences and not second guessing their views can sometimes be a challenge.

Here are my five steps for Active Listening.  I hope you find them as useful as I do.

1.  Stop talking.

2.  Open your ears and your heart.

3.  Repeat back in your own words what you heard.

4.  Ask "did I get that right?"

5.  Repeat Step 1.
